Easter in Italy
From what we gather, there are three main Easter traditions in Italy. 1) Giving and recieving chocolate eggs. These eggs are basically oversized kinder surprise eggs. The large chocolate egg is hollow, and inside there is a “surprise” that could be anything from a kids toy to expensive jewlery (depending on how much you spend). 2) Eating colomba (dove) cake. Colomba is a chewy, sweet fruit cake, baked in the shape of a dove, and covered with sugar chunks. Both the chocolate eggs and colomba cakes have been in store windows for the past month, and Italians spend a total of 120 million Euros on these goodies. 3) Going on a mini-vacation. 7 million Italians travel over the long Easter weekend, mostly to the mountains, where it’s the last weekend of skiing, or to the sea, where it’s the beginning of beach season.
We partook in our own Italian Easter tradition by getting a chocolate egg. Our chocolate egg was the Baci brand, which promised us 4 baci chocolates and another surprise on the inside.
